Wouldn't have cost the catcher ANYTHING but one second to reach out and tag the runner before he crossed. If it's a dead ball, so what. If it's the end of the inning, so what. If it embarrasses you, so what. Always pay attention, and always do the right thing. This is is a life lesson the catcher won't soon forget.
Much of life looks unimportant, not worth paying attention to, or things to just "let slide". The converse, catastrophes and disasters (things that change your life forever, and even make & kill you) are often just seconds of inattention, or where we get lazy and not do the right thing.
